Two scenes from the early history of the Royal Flying Corps. Top right is the first ever reconnaissance mission which took place on 19th August 1914. The two planes are a Bleriot Xi bis (the military version of the first plane to cross the English Channel) and a BE2b.

On the left we see the first RFC victory: on 25th August 1914 three BE2a planes forced a German plane to land. The pilots ran off and a British plane landed and the crew set fire to the German machine.
