This is the Signed unique original Gouache painting by James E McConnell.

Thomas Dover was a successful Bristol Physician and already 48 years old when in 1708 he became second in command of a fleet of Privateers. This despite the fact he knew nothing of navigation.

It was he who rescued Alexander Selkirk from the island of Juan Fernandez, the man who's remarkable story inspired the novel Robinson Crusoe, written by Daniel Defoe.

Later he helped capture the Spanish treasure ship the Acapulco. After three years he returned to live and work in Bristol where he died at age 82 a very rich man.

Original artwork from Look and Learn no. 387 (14 June 1969).
